The night it fails, Thornton

KryoFridge sets the bar for right-sized walk-in freezer trailer rentals in Thornton

Start with two numbers: how many pallets or cases you need to hold, and how many times a shift somebody opens the door. Those two numbers pick the trailer. We carry an 8 foot unit, a 12 foot unit and our 16 foot Utility, and if the 12 holds your stock with room to move, the 12 is what we send. A box that fits the load cools down faster and stays colder between door openings, while an oversized one costs you more, takes up parking and takes longer to pull down. We have learned that over more than 30 years in the rental business, and we would rather rent you the right unit than the biggest one. Call us or request a quote, give us your count, and we will size it straight.

We own the trailers

Every trailer we deliver in Thornton belongs to us. You are not paying a broker who books someone else's box and hopes it shows up cold.

One unit, freezer or cooler

Each trailer sets anywhere from about -10 up to about 50 degrees. If your needs change halfway through a rental, we change the setting instead of swapping the trailer.

Food-safe inside

The inside surfaces are NSF approved for food contact and easy to wipe down. Food goes in and stays clean.

A rental family, 30+ years in

KryoFridge comes from a family that has been in the equipment and event rental business for more than 30 years. We know how a delivery goes wrong, and we plan around it.

"Our walk-in quit on a Sunday morning. The trailer was in our lot before lunch, already cold, and we moved everything in one trip."

Anthony L. · kitchen manager, restaurant off 104th Avenue

"We were moving buildings and our refrigerated supplies needed a home for five days. The trailer held the setting we asked for the whole time. Easy people to work with."

James W. · clinic manager, north Thornton

"Fourth of July week always blows up our freezer space with ice cream and burgers. This year the overflow went in their 16 foot trailer and my team used the side door all week. No more stacking cases in the aisles."

The 16 ft Utility, our flagship reefer trailer for greater Thornton

For most Thornton kitchens, the 12 foot unit covers a walk-in that quit. Grocers heading into Thanksgiving and big weekend events at Carpenter Park Fields tend to need the 16 foot Utility.

The 16' Utility earned its flagship spot the hard way, on jobs where a few degrees of drift would have cost somebody their inventory. The box is 16 feet long and fully insulated, riding on a tandem axle. The interior is NSF approved. One digital set point covers everything from -10°F frozen storage to a 50°F produce cooler. There are two ways in: rear double doors for pallets, and the side utility door for everyday grab-and-go.

Because we own and service the entire fleet, the trailer on your lot was prepped in our yard, not scrambled together after your call. It lives on a dedicated 120V, 20-amp circuit or a generator we supply, and it keeps its temperature whether the job runs a weekend or a full season.

Where we deliver mobile cold storage on wheels around Thornton

We deliver across Thornton, from Original Thornton up through Eastlake and the E-470 corridor, and out to Northglenn, Brighton, Commerce City and the rest of the north metro. Our service area covers all 50 states, and the same owned fleet and dispatch team that handles St. George freezer trailer rentals in southern Utah handles your order here. Call with your address and we will tell you the delivery window before you hang up.

Neighborhoods and towns we cover include Original Thornton, Thornton Crossroads, Eastlake, Todd Creek, Riverdale, Northglenn, Federal Heights, Westminster, Broomfield, Brighton, Henderson, Commerce City, Welby, Sherrelwood, Derby, Dacono, Frederick, Firestone, Erie, Fort Lupton, Lochbuie, Hudson, North Denver, Denver International Airport.

Our delivery territory for portable refrigeration units across Thornton

Every part of the Thornton area rents cold storage for its own reasons. We know each one, and we deliver to all of them.

Northglenn

Northglenn sits right next door and shares the I-25 and Highway 7 business strips, with about 38,000 people packed into 7.44 square miles. Lots are tight, so the 8 foot and 12 foot units do most of the work here. A kitchen on one side of 120th Avenue gets the same response as one on the other.

Brighton

Brighton, the Adams County seat, is about 12 miles northeast by Highway 7 or 85. Its business mix leans toward manufacturing and farming, so we see more plant cafeteria and fair vendor calls there than restaurant emergencies.

Commerce City

Commerce City, about 10 miles south on I-76, grew about 36 percent between 2010 and 2020. The refinery and the stadium both bring shift work and big crowds, so caterers and concession teams there need extra cold room on short notice.

Denver International Airport and the E-470 corridor

E-470 runs along Thornton's north edge and is the fast road to DIA, which moved more than 732 million pounds of cargo in 2025. Catering and logistics businesses along that corridor need backup cold storage that can get there without crossing downtown.

Thornton's Weld County side

Part of Thornton sits in Weld County, north of the older neighborhoods, where farm ground keeps turning into new homes and shops. Sites up there are often new pads with no building power yet, so a generator is part of the plan.

The Vestas wind turbine plants in Brighton and the Suncor refinery in Commerce City bring in extra crews during planned shutdowns. The caterer feeding those crews needs cold room on site for the length of the job.

What ties these together is the clock. Nobody budgets a freezer trailer into next quarter. They reach for one the hour a compressor quits, or the evening before a party when the stack of rented ice chests suddenly looks laughably undersized. Since our units sit staged around Thornton instead of a couple counties down the freeway, "can I get it today" is an ordinary ask here, not a stretch.

The arithmetic behind renting mobile cold storage in the Thornton area

Real numbers, Thornton

Add it up the way an owner in Thornton has to. One restaurant walk-in routinely sits on a small fortune in proteins, dairy, and prepped product. Scale that to a grocery rack or a warehouse freezer bay and the exposure balloons. Now knock the power or the compressor out on a triple-digit afternoon, and that whole inventory is in jeopardy inside a few hours. Then stack on the sales you lose while the line sits dark and the wages you burn paying staff to triage what can still be saved.

Hold a pre-staged trailer up against that risk and it reads like cheap insurance, a fixed, predictable expense parked in front of a loss with no ceiling. That is exactly why the businesses that got stung once tape our number by the phone. There is never a second scramble, because the next time they dial before the product has a chance to warm. Owning every trailer ourselves means we can scale the answer to fit. A single compact box suits a corner cafe. A clustered setup covers a warehouse floor. Either one is booked with a single call.

Hail, wind and power outages: when a cold storage trailer becomes the backup plan

Thornton sits inside Hail Alley, the stretch where Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming meet and large hail falls more often than anywhere else in North America. Hail season on the Front Range runs from March into October, with the worst of it from May through September, usually in the afternoon. A bad storm can crack the rooftop cooling unit on a restaurant or grocery store in a few minutes, and the walk-in below it starts warming right away.

Wind is the other one. The Marshall Fire in Boulder County, which started December 30, 2021, was pushed by gusts up to 115 miles per hour and destroyed 1,084 structures. Power and water systems failed across the burn area at the same time. Thornton gets the same kind of strong wind coming down off the mountains, and strong wind days are the days the grid is most likely to go down.

When the power drops, a walk-in on building power has no backup at all. A trailer with its own generator does. In storm season we keep units ready to go out with generators, and the first question we ask on an outage call is whether your building has power or not.

Refrigerated trailer rentals for pharmacy and medical cold storage

Pharmacies keep a lot of stock in the cold. Insulin and many liquid medicines have to stay between about 36 and 46 degrees, and so does plenty of other product on the back shelves. When a pharmacy cooler fails or the back room gets torn out for a remodel, that stock needs a safe place to sit for days or even weeks. An 8 foot or 12 foot refrigerated trailer set in the high 30s gives it that place, a few steps from the back door.

There is more health care in Thornton than people expect from a suburb. HCA HealthONE Mountain Ridge on Grant Street is the only Level II trauma center in Adams County, and clinics and store pharmacies sit along Washington Street and 104th Avenue. Every one of those buildings has cold rooms, and cold rooms fail on holiday weekends like anywhere else.

A white refrigerated trailer parked behind a suburban strip-center pharmacy in late afternoon, a pharmacy tech in a white coat carrying a plastic tote toward the rear doors

We are straight with pharmacy customers about two things. We do not sell a monitoring service, so we ask you to put your own temperature recorder in the trailer and check it on your normal schedule. Vaccines have their own storage guidance from the CDC, which favors purpose-built medical units. Vaccines stay in those units, and the trailer holds the rest of your cold stock.

Placement matters more with medicine than with food. We set the trailer as close to the pharmacy door as the lot allows, face the doors away from the afternoon sun when we can, and cool it down before any stock goes in. Then the product moves over by the tote, and the doors stay shut between trips.

Three cold storage trailer sizes, and every one is a freezer or a cooler

Every KryoFridge trailer is a freezer and a refrigerator in one. You set it anywhere from about -10 degrees for ice cream and frozen meat up to about 50 degrees for produce and drinks, and the digital control holds that number. The inside surfaces are food safe and NSF approved. The rear double doors open wide, so pallet loads come straight off a dock.

The 8 foot fits a tight back lot behind a small shop or strip-center restaurant. The 12 foot is the everyday size for a kitchen whose walk-in went down or a caterer with a big weekend. The 16 foot Utility is our signature trailer, with a side door so staff can grab a few cases without opening the rear doors to the sun. Each one plugs into a dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp circuit within about 100 feet, or draws power from a generator we bring.

We own every trailer in the fleet and keep them up ourselves. The portable freezer trailer that pulls into your Thornton lot was checked and cooled before it left. If something goes wrong in the middle of a rental, you call the people who own it, and someone answers around the clock.

Portable freezer trailer rentals when a kitchen walk-in goes down

The walk-in is the center of a restaurant's back room. Proteins, prepped sauces and the next two days of produce all live in there. When its cooling unit quits, the kitchen has a few hours before food starts drifting out of safe range. We get that call from the restaurant rows along Washington Street, 104th Avenue and Grant Street, and the fix is a trailer in the lot with the walk-in emptied into it before the dinner push.

Not every call is an emergency. A walk-in replacement or a new kitchen floor can take a cooler offline for a week or longer, and restaurants in the older strip centers near Thornton Town Center book around those jobs. We set a 12 foot unit near the back door, and the cooks work out of it like a second walk-in while the contractor does the work.

A 16 foot white freezer trailer in the back lot of a suburban restaurant, a cook in an apron carrying a sheet pan through the trailer's side door

Banquet kitchens hit a different wall. Thorncreek Golf Course and Todd Creek Golf both run clubhouse kitchens and host golf tournament dinners, and a walk-in built for a normal weekday lunch was never meant to hold food and drinks for a 150-person dinner. A cooler trailer set at 36 degrees takes the overflow for the weekend and goes home Monday.

School kitchens feel the same squeeze on a bigger scale. Adams 12 Five Star Schools is based on East 128th Avenue and serves about 36,000 students across roughly 52 sites. Summer meal programs, sports award dinners and graduation season all push cold storage past what one school kitchen was built to hold. A trailer at the loading area for a few weeks costs far less than adding permanent space you would only fill in June.

Temporary cold storage rentals for grocery holiday overflow

Grocery stores plan their cold space around a normal week. Then Thanksgiving turkeys, Christmas hams and the Fourth of July push on ice cream and burgers shows up, and the back room is full by Tuesday. A 16 foot Utility set as a freezer at the loading area holds the overflow pallets. The side door lets staff pull a few cases for the floor without opening the whole box.

Thornton keeps adding shoppers. The city grew from 118,772 people in 2010 to 141,867 in 2020, and its latest estimate is about 147,700. More households means more frozen and dairy volume moving through the same back doors at Larkridge, Thornton Town Center and Thorncreek Crossing.

A 16 foot white freezer trailer at a suburban grocery store loading area, a store worker using a pallet jack to move a pallet of frozen turkeys out of the rear doors

Drinks eat cold space fast, really fast. Thornton is home to DaveCo Liquor, which Guinness lists as the largest liquor store in the world, and that tells you how much beer, wine and soda moves through this part of the metro. Any store that sells cold drinks knows what a dead cooler the week before a holiday does to its shelves.

Remodels are the other big reason grocers call. When a store swaps out its reach-in cases or redoes a frozen food aisle, product has to live somewhere for the week of the install. We set two trailers side by side when the load calls for it, one as a freezer and one as a cooler, so frozen food and dairy never share a box.

Cold set points for clients, product by product near Thornton

"Cold" is not one number. Different product stays safe inside different temperature windows, which is the entire reason a precise digital set-point matters, and in the middle of a heat wave in Thornton, a load that slips out of its window is a load you write off. Use the chart below as the reference our customers lean on when they size a rental.

ProductTarget holding bandTrailer mode
Ice cream and frozen desserts-10°F to 0°FDeep freeze
Frozen proteins, seafood, prepared meals0°F or belowFreezer
Fresh meat and poultry (short hold)28°F to 32°FRefrigerated
Dairy, deli, packaged produce34°F to 38°FRefrigerated
Beverages, florals, catering trays38°F to 45°FRefrigerated

One figure matters more than everything in that chart, and it is not listed there: 40°F. Food-safety guidance treats the band between 40°F and 140°F as the zone where bacteria thrive, and the clock on perishable product starts ticking the moment it crosses 40 on the way up. Roughly four cumulative hours above that line and most refrigerated inventory is no longer safe to serve. Picture that countdown running on a 100-degree afternoon in Thornton with the walk-in dark, and the urgency of a quick trailer drop stops being abstract.

Tell us the single coldest item you are holding when you call, and we dial the trailer to that. One unit carries a straight freezer load with no fuss. But when your list mixes deep-freeze desserts with fresh-cold produce for the same remodel or event, we will usually point you toward a split setup or a second box so neither side of the load has to settle for the wrong temperature.

Getting a Thornton-area site ready for a refrigerated trailer

Powering one of our trailers is refreshingly simple, and there are precisely two ways to do it. Either you have a dedicated 120-volt, 20-amp circuit reachable within roughly 100 feet of the parking spot, or we bring a generator. What the units will not accept is standard 208 to 240V building service, so a quick question about your outlet before dispatch heads off any surprise on delivery day.

  • Dedicated outlet on hand? Most Thornton kitchens and markets already have the right one, so we plug straight in and the unit begins pulling the temperature down.
  • Open lot or event field? A generator keeps the trailer running anywhere, whether that is an event lawn or a warehouse yard.
  • Worried about a shutoff? A unit on a generator keeps your cold chain alive when a storm or a utility outage takes the surrounding grid down.
A white KryoFridge refrigerated trailer on generator power in Thornton

On placement, all the unit really asks for is a fairly flat patch with enough room for the delivery truck to maneuver it in and set it straight, plus either a power source in reach or space for a generator. We lock down the exact drop point before dispatch, and our drivers know the Thornton layout cold, so the delivery is one clean trip instead of a guessing game on the property.

A typical refrigeration trailer delivery for Thornton warehouses, start to finish

In plain terms, Thornton

A typical setup for a pharmacy cooler replacement

A typical setup for a pharmacy waiting on a cooler replacement looks like this: an 8 foot refrigerated trailer sets up at 38 degrees at the back of the lot while the new unit is on order. Staff move stock over in bins and place their own temperature recorder inside to track it on their normal schedule. The trailer stays until the new cooler passes inspection, whether that takes a few days or a couple of weeks.

A typical setup after a rooftop unit failure

A typical setup for a restaurant kitchen after a rooftop unit failure looks like this: a 12 foot trailer arrives at the lot, giving the kitchen a place to move product before close. Repairs on a cracked rooftop unit or a failed part can run more than a week depending on parts availability. The trailer covers that gap so nothing has to be thrown out while the repair is underway.

A typical setup for holiday grocery overflow

A typical setup for grocery overflow around Thanksgiving looks like this: a 16 foot Utility trailer sets up at freezer temperature by the loading area a day or two before the holiday rush. Staff pull product through a side door so the rear doors stay shut and cold air stays in. The trailer usually goes back within a few days after the holiday once the overflow clears.

We plan around the Quebec Street pipeline work. The Thornton Water Project laid a 42-inch pipe along Quebec Street and down toward the Wes Brown Treatment Plant, and restoration work along that path can still slow traffic. We check the route before the truck leaves so the trailer comes in on I-25 or E-470 and around the work.

Booking a walk-in freezer trailer: what happens after you call in Thornton

On a bad day, booking should be the part that does not add stress. Four steps, an upfront number, and a single person who owns the whole thing.

Step 1 · Describe the load

Tell us whether it is freezer or fridge product, a ballpark volume, and your rough window. That is enough for us to call the right size.

Step 2 · We finalize size, power and spot

We pair you with a unit, confirm whether you have a dedicated circuit or need a generator, and pin the exact drop point so the truck makes one trip.

Step 3 · Drop-off, placement and cold-down

We arrive on your schedule, about 45 minutes for a true emergency, set the trailer, energize it, and let it drive down to your number.

Step 4 · It runs, dispatch answers around the clock

It holds the set-point for your entire term while our line stays live the whole way through. Wrap up, and we swing back for the pickup.

Food safety rules for cold storage trailers in Adams County

Food safety and permits

The Adams County Health Department handles food safety inspections, environmental health and emergency preparedness across the county, and it works with the city on food businesses inside Thornton. Temporary food vendors at events like ThorntonFest, Harvest Fest, WinterFest and the Adams County Fair fall under that same food safety oversight. Inspectors expect cold holding to be planned before the event opens, not figured out on the day, so a trailer that is already running and cold when they walk by is the easy answer.

Colorado's retail food rules follow the same basic model as the FDA Food Code, which calls for cold foods that need temperature control to be held at 41 degrees or below. Setting a cooler trailer in the mid-30s gives you room under that line, even with a busy door. Frozen product should stay frozen solid. Keep a thermometer inside and write the readings down, because the county will ask how you know the product stayed cold.

For public buyers, KryoFridge is licensed, insured and registered in SAM.gov, which covers the vendor paperwork that Adams County, the City of Thornton and federal agencies usually ask for. If you are ordering for an agency, send us your purchasing requirements when you request a quote and we will match them before the trailer is scheduled.

Where the equipment helps during a food-safety check in Thornton

  • NSF-approved interior surfaces built for direct food contact.
  • A digital controller that puts the set-point in plain view for the inspector.
  • Proper drainage and a sealed, food-safe insulated box.
  • Licensed and insured on every unit we put on the road.

One caveat we always state plainly: we supply the food-safe, temperature-holding hardware itself, but we are not a temperature-logging or alarm-monitoring service. If your program requires continuous written records, line that vendor up on your own.

Trailer sizes against real Thornton-area jobs

Our signature 16 foot Utility series leads the fleet. It is the trailer we send on most jobs, and crews like it for the side utility access door. We build three footprints in all, so a single kitchen holding overflow stock has a fit and so does a distribution floor in a disaster. Every unit is dual purpose by design: one adjustable system swings between freezer and refrigerator on a digital set point. Each trailer runs on a dedicated circuit or on a generator.

6x12Grocers, caterers, mid-size eventsDeep-freeze capable
6x8Tight lots, small kitchens, short overflow-10°F to 50°F

All three sizes switch between freezer and cooler mode, so the choice comes down to footprint and how much product you need to hold.

Our 6x8: the short trailer for small kitchens near Thornton

It's the unit to grab when square footage is the whole problem. It slips into the pinched service yards and cramped back-of-house corners that a larger box cannot even swing into. One cafe or small-market walk-in goes down, and this is almost always enough cold to cover it, plus the simplest unit to set in a small space.

6x12, the everyday pick for grocers and caterers near Thornton

Deep-freeze rated, and far and away the size people ask for most. It lands right in the middle: roomy enough for a multi-day catering job or a restaurant that needs true walk-in-equivalent room while the kitchen is torn up. Roomy enough that nobody is playing Tetris with shelves, yet still small enough to set in most commercial back lots without a site survey.

The 6x16, the heavy-duty pick across Thornton

Our biggest footprint, paired with a heavy-duty reefer plant engineered to keep deep-freeze locked in even when the ambient air is merciless. Reach for it when a warehouse bay drops, when a large festival needs an anchor, or when a relief operation is carrying its own cold chain.

Not sure which size fits? Most customers land on the 16 foot Utility, and we will tell you honestly if a smaller footprint covers your job. Tell us roughly what you are storing and for how long, and we will spec it for you.

More portable freezer unit questions from Thornton renters

The questions that surface once the basics are settled. Tap any topic to open it.

Cold storage trailer, portable walk-in or reefer truck for a caterer: which one fits

The pop-up walk-in cooler. Cheap to rent and easy to set up, but it chills, it does not freeze, and it draws every watt it needs from your building while depending on a calm ambient temperature around it. The second your building loses power, your cooler loses it too.

The refrigerated box truck. Designed to haul product on the interstate, not to sit in a lot and babysit it. Parked, it burns fuel all day, broadcasts compressor noise across a storefront or an event lawn, and pins down a tractor plus a driver you probably do not need.

The freezer trailer we deliver. Built from the ground up to be dropped on a pad and to defend a temperature for as long as the job runs. It freezes deep, carries NSF approval, locks, stays quiet near guests, and lives on nothing more than one dedicated circuit or a generator.

What the trailer's build brings to an inspector

Even a rented box has to satisfy the county environmental health office that licenses and inspects every food facility. Show an inspector a unit that cannot document its temperature or was not built for food contact, and they have the authority to halt service immediately.

That is a bar each of our trailers clears: NSF-approved throughout, food-safe interior surfaces, proper drainage, and a digital controller that puts the set-point in plain view. We supply the food-safe, temperature-holding hardware itself, but we are not a temperature-logging or alarm-monitoring service.

Clustering cold storage trailers for a big event

For a typical kitchen or market, one box does the job. Distribution floors, big fairs, and full-scale disaster response routinely need more, and because the fleet is ours, we can cluster several units and bring them online in waves as the work expands. Match the cold capacity to the operation rather than make the operation squeeze itself into one box.

Short-term emergency or contract storage for many months?

The clock is yours to set. Some jobs are a handful of days for an emergency or a single event. Others stretch across weeks or months for a remodel or a seasonal swell, and a few become standing contracts for businesses that want capacity parked on standby. Name your window and you will get a clean quote, no penalty for an honest "not sure yet."

Why renting usually beats building for a seasonal peak

Building permanent cold storage is a capital project in every sense: you hire a refrigeration contractor, schedule the electrical, pull a building permit, and wait weeks before a single pallet goes inside. A rental turns that equation on its head. You bring in precisely the cold you need, for precisely the stretch you need it, and the trailer is holding temperature within days, not months, with the commitment ending the moment your need is over.

Holding temperature through a heat wave

Three engineered elements carry the load. Thick insulated panels and tightly gasketed doors lock the sun outside and the cold inside. A self-contained reefer condensing system specified with surplus capacity keeps stripping heat out of the box even when the air outside is brutal. And a digital thermostat locks onto your chosen number and cycles the compressor to hold the line. Run those three together and a trailer baking on open asphalt behaves like one tucked in a cool warehouse. That is also why power is the first thing we ask about: the design delivers its safety margin only on steady, uninterrupted power.

What Thornton businesses ask before a freezer trailer rental

Will you be able to get a trailer to my Thornton restaurant today, and what does my lot need?

It depends on the fleet that day. If a unit is free, we give you the soonest delivery window we can, and our dispatch line is open 24/7 for emergencies. Your lot needs a firm, fairly level spot on pavement or gravel and a clear path for the truck to back the trailer in. For power, you need a dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp circuit within about 100 feet, or we bring a generator. Send a photo of the spot when you call, along with the nearest outlet and anything overhead like wires or tree limbs, and we can usually tell you right away whether it works. Simple as that.

Can the trailer hold its temperature through a 100-degree July afternoon or a below-zero January night?

Yes, within reason. Northglenn, right next door, has recorded 108 degrees in August and 24 below zero in December, so we plan for both ends. The box is insulated and the cooling unit is sized to hold its setting on hot days, as long as the doors stay shut between trips. In deep cold, the bigger risk is cooler product freezing in a tent or shed, and inside the insulated trailer the temperature stays far steadier. Tell us your dates and the forecast and we will talk through the setting and placement.

Is a 12 foot trailer enough for what I need to store, or should I get the 16 foot?

Measure first. A walk-in that is 8 by 10 feet has about 80 square feet of floor, which lines up close to our 12 foot unit, while a few reach-ins' worth of overflow fits in the 8 foot. Then think about the door. If staff will be in and out all day, the 16 foot Utility has a side door that keeps the rear doors shut and the cold in. Give us your pallet count and how often the door opens, and we will do the math with you.

Where can the trailer sit, and do I need a permit in Thornton?

On a private lot, the property owner's permission is usually all you need, and most of our Thornton drops sit in a rear lot or next to a loading area. A spot on a public street, a sidewalk or a city park is different, so check with the City of Thornton or the event organizer before you book. Festival vendors should follow the organizer's site plan. If you are selling food, the Adams County Health Department also expects your cold holding to be part of your vendor plan.

What do you do to clean the trailer between rentals, and can food go straight on the floor?

Each trailer is cleaned and sanitized before it goes out, and the inside surfaces are NSF approved for food contact. Even so, keep food off the floor. The FDA Food Code calls for food to be stored at least 6 inches above the floor, so bring shelving or keep product on pallets. Wipe up spills as they happen, and keep raw meat on the bottom shelf, below anything ready to eat, the same way you would in your own walk-in. It matters. When the rental ends, pull all product and trash so the trailer can go back into service quickly.

When the door has been open for a big load, how fast does the trailer get back to temperature?

That depends on two things: how long the door was open and how warm the load was. We cool the trailer before delivery, so it arrives already at your setting, anywhere from about -10 to 50 degrees. Product that goes in cold, straight from a walk-in or a delivery truck, lets it recover quickly. Hot or room-temperature food is the problem, so cool it first. Load in batches with the door closed between trips, rather than holding it open for an hour.

How do we load pallets without a loading dock, and can we bring our own shelving?

The rear double doors open wide, and a dock is the easiest way to load full pallets. Without one, most kitchens break pallets down and carry cases in by hand or on a cart, which is often faster than it sounds. Tell us how you plan to load when you book so we can set the trailer at the right spot and height. Yes, bring shelving. Wire shelves from the dead walk-in are the most common thing we see go in, and they keep food off the floor.

Do you swap the trailer if something goes wrong with it during my rental?

Yes. We own and maintain every unit, so a problem gets a call to our 24/7 dispatch line and a fix from our own people, either a repair on site or another trailer, whichever gets you cold faster. While you wait, keep the doors shut. Every one of them. A loaded, closed trailer holds its cold for hours, and every door opening cuts that time.

What power setup works behind a Thornton strip-center restaurant?

The trailer needs a dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp circuit, meaning nothing else on that breaker, within about 100 feet of where it sits. It is not wired for 208 or 240 volt building service, so a bigger outlet on the wall will not help, no matter how close it is to the spot where the trailer sits. Many older buildings have a spare exterior outlet on the back wall; check which breaker feeds it before you call. If there is no good circuit, or the whole block is out, we bring a generator.

Are you set up for Adams County, city or federal agency orders?

Yes. KryoFridge is licensed, insured and registered in SAM.gov, which covers the vendor paperwork public buyers usually ask for. Send your purchase order requirements with your quote request and we will match them. For emergency and disaster work, tell us that up front so we can move you to the front of the schedule.

Should festival vendors at Carpenter Park Fields share one trailer?

Often, yes, as long as everyone needs the same temperature. Vendors selling ice cream and frozen desserts can share a freezer unit, and drink and dairy vendors can share a cooler. Mixing the two in one box does not work. Agree ahead of time on restock times and who is in charge of the door, and ask the organizer early whether there is power anywhere near the vendor row or whether a generator should come with the trailer.

A week-out cold storage checklist for Thornton festival vendors

Thornton's city festivals pack a lot of food into a short window. ThorntonFest ran June 6 this year at Carpenter Park Fields and went until the laser show after 9 p.m. Harvest Fest is set for October 3 at Community Park on East 95th Avenue, with more than 100 vendors. WinterFest takes over Carpenter Park Fields again from December 11 through 13. Each one puts beer gardens, dessert stands and food trucks in a field for a long day, and the cold side of the plan usually gets built last.

Start about a week out, and start with what you are storing, not how much. Ice cream and frozen treats want a trailer set near -10 degrees. Drinks, dairy and prepped toppings want the mid-30s. Those two loads should not share one box. If your booth sells both, plan on two small units, or split the job with a neighbor whose load matches yours.

What changes the quote on a cold storage trailer rental in Thornton

We don't post prices on this site, because the same trailer can cost very different amounts depending on the job. The things that move a quote are no secret. Knowing them helps you ask for the right thing and compare quotes fairly. Size comes first. An 8 foot unit costs less to deliver and set than the 16 foot Utility, so it pays to know your load before you call. Measure the walk-in you are replacing, or count the pallets and cases you need to hold. A walk-in that is 8 by 10 feet lines up close to a 12 foot trailer. A few reach-ins' worth of overflow fits in the 8 foot.

How long you keep it matters. A three-day festival is priced differently from a two-month remodel, and longer holds usually work out better per day. If your contractor says four weeks, ask what it will really be, and book with some slack. Adding days later is easy. A trailer that has to leave before the new walk-in passes its check is a real problem.

Plan for a power outage before your walk-in goes dark

A lot of the cold storage losses we see start with a power outage nobody planned for. The walk-in was fine. The grid was not. Wind and summer storms can drop power across a big part of the north metro, and the first hour after the lights go out is when the good choices get made or missed.

Start with what the federal guidance says. Ready.gov notes that a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about four hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, or about 24 if it is half full. A walk-in works the same way. More is at stake, though. Every time someone opens the door to check, that clock gets shorter.

Keeping a rented refrigerated trailer working through a Front Range winter

Winter keeps us busy in the north metro. Grocers hold holiday overflow, caterers stack up December parties, and WinterFest vendors need cold room for a three-day event. Cold weather brings its own problems, and most of them have nothing to do with the cooling unit itself.

The ground is the first one. Thornton sits at about 5,200 feet, and a sunny 45-degree afternoon followed by a hard freeze can turn a soft lot into ruts overnight. A trailer set on dirt in November may be sitting crooked by January, and a crooked trailer can keep its doors from sealing. We set winter units on pavement or gravel whenever we can, and we check level at delivery.

Questions to ask before you rent a refrigerated trailer in the north metro

Not every company that says it rents cold storage trailers owns one. Some are brokers who take your order and then call around to find a unit. That works until the truck is late or the trailer shows up warm, and then you learn who you actually hired. A few direct questions on the first call tell you a lot.

First, find out who owns the trailer. You want the company on the phone to own the unit, maintain it and send its own crew. A company that owns its fleet can tell you where each unit is and when it was last serviced, whether that trailer is headed to a Thornton grocery or out on Tempe cold storage trailer rentals in Arizona.
